TMJ Treatment
Many people suffer from TMJ Disorder without realizing what it is and that it can be treated.
"TMJ" stands for temporomandibular joint. The TMJs are the small joints in front of each ear that attach the lower jaw to the skull. They allow you to perform such functions as opening and closing your mouth, chewing, speaking, and swallowing. TMJD or TMD is a disorder of these joints that causes a range of symptoms, the most prevalent of which is pain or discomfort in the jaw, teeth, ears, head, or neck.
In most cases, TMJ problems are manifested by pain in the muscles along with limitations in the ability to execute normal movements. If you suffer from this type of pain, or any of the symptoms listed below, TMJ treatment with neuromuscular dentistry may be the answer to your problems.
Some symptoms of TMJ are:
• Headaches/migraines
• Neck/Shoulder aches
• Jaw pain/tenderness
• Sensitive and sore teeth
• Clenching of the teeth
• Loose teeth
• Facial pain
• Worn down teeth
• Ear congestion/ earache
• Forward head posturing
• Clicking/popping in the joints
• Limited opening of the mouth
• Tingling in the fingertips
• Tinnitus
Finding your neuromuscular jaw position is the most important step in TMJ treatment and needs to occur before a final restorative/orthodontic phase is started. This step is important to prevent muscular imbalances that could lead to instability of the teeth, bone, and posture. When the balance of the teeth, facial muscles, and temporomandibular joints is off, symptoms of what has been identified as TMJ/TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction) can arise.
Many causes of TMJ have been identified. Some of the common causes are listed below.
Some causes of TMJ are:
• Bruxism (unconscious and repetitive clenching or grinding of teeth)
• Misalignment of teeth due to improperly placed crowns or other dental procedures
• Lack of over bite
• Excessive chewing or biting
• Trauma
If you are suffering from any of these painful symptoms, you may be suffering from TMJ. But don’t despair because we can help! Please contact our experience and professional team today to schedule a consultation and learn about our TMJ treatments.
