A root canal refers to the area within the root of a tooth, but also refers to the procedure used to treat infections of this area of the tooth. This hollow space contains soft tissues including blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. These tissues are collectively referred to as dental pulp. When this pulp becomes infected, it causes pain in the tooth. This necessitates removal of the infected tissue. This endodontic therapy is known as a Root Canal procedure. During this procedure, the infected tissue is removed and the space is disinfected and filled.
